Nepal secured the ACC Men’s Premier Cup title on Saturday after defeating the United Arab Emirates by 44 runs in the final at Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, earning a direct place in the 2027 Asia Cup.

Batting first after winning the toss, Nepal posted a formidable 313 for nine in 50 overs. The UAE fought back through Rahul Chopra’s century but were eventually dismissed for 269 in 49.1 overs.

The victory gives Nepal their second Premier Cup title and another major result against the UAE, following their triumph over the same opponent in the final of the inaugural 2023 edition.

Aasif Sheikh anchors Nepal’s innings

Nepal’s total was built around a superb century from wicketkeeper-batter Aasif Sheikh.

Sheikh scored 102 from 106 deliveries, striking eight fours and four sixes. It was his second ODI century and provided the foundation for Nepal’s highest-impact batting performance of the tournament.

He began the innings with Arjun Kumal, with the pair putting together a 97-run opening stand. Kumal contributed 43 before being dismissed.

Sheikh then continued to build partnerships through the middle overs. He added 36 with Ishan Pandey and another 68 with captain Rohit Paudel, who scored 40.

Nepal received further momentum late in the innings from Gulshan Jha, who struck 52 from only 38 balls, including three fours and four sixes. His aggressive finish helped Nepal reach 313 for nine.

UAE make a strong start but fall short

The UAE began the chase with the target of 314, but Nepal's bowlers gradually regained control.

Rahul Chopra produced the UAE's outstanding individual performance, scoring an unbeaten century. Tanish Suri made 42 and captain Harpreet Bhatia contributed 33, but the UAE could not maintain the required scoring rate through the closing stages.

Nepal's bowling attack remained disciplined as the innings progressed. Karan KC was the leading wicket-taker with three wickets, while Lalit Rajbanshi claimed two. Sandeep Lamichhane, Rohit Paudel, Gulshan Jha, Basir Ahamad and Dipendra Singh Airee took one wicket each.

The UAE were eventually bowled out for 269 in 49.1 overs, leaving Nepal with a 44-run victory.

Nepal secure Asia Cup qualification

The Premier Cup final carried significance beyond the trophy. Under the 2026 qualification format, the winner of the tournament earned the direct berth at the 2027 Asia Cup.

Nepal's qualification means they will join the continent's leading teams at next year's tournament. The Asia Cup is scheduled to be held in Bangladesh from June 18 to July 4, 2027, according to pre-final tournament information.

Nepal reached the final after beating Oman by 87 runs in the semifinal. They had earlier defeated Bahrain, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia in the group stage, while their only group-stage defeat came against Hong Kong.

The UAE entered the final unbeaten in the competition after winning all four of their group matches and defeating Hong Kong by seven wickets in the semifinal.

Another important chapter in Nepal-UAE rivalry

The final added another significant chapter to a closely contested rivalry between Nepal and the UAE.

The two sides had already met in high-stakes qualification matches and in the 2023 Premier Cup final, when Nepal also defeated the UAE to secure the title and an Asia Cup place.

Saturday's result once again saw Nepal prevail when the stakes were at their highest.

For Nepal, the victory combines a tournament title with qualification for the next Asia Cup and provides another strong result for a side led in the 50-over format by Sandeep Lamichhane. The leg-spinner was appointed Nepal's ODI captain ahead of the Premier Cup.

The immediate reward is the Asia Cup berth. The broader significance is another step forward for Nepal's men's cricket as the team continues to compete for places on Asia's biggest international stage.
