Prime Minister’s Relief Fund Nears Rs 12 Billion as Flood Donations Surge

Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Disaster Rescue Fund and Prime Minister’s Relief Fund have accumulated nearly Rs 11.78 billion as financial contributions continue to pour in following the devastating Bhotekoshi floods.

According to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, the combined balance stood at Rs 11.776 billion as of 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Rs 8.59 billion held in commercial banks

Of the amount collected, approximately Rs 8.59 billion is currently held across nine commercial banks.

The government has already released Rs 1 billion from the relief funds to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) for relief efforts targeting flood-affected people in Rasuwa.

The funds are being accumulated to support ongoing rescue, relief, rehabilitation and recovery efforts following the August 26 disaster.

Foreign-currency donations also received

The relief effort has also attracted contributions in foreign currency.

The government said approximately Rs 21.1 million equivalent in US-dollar deposits had been received in dollar-denominated accounts maintained at Himalayan Bank and Laxmi Sunrise Bank.

The growing fund reflects contributions from individuals, institutions and organisations responding to the scale of the disaster.

Search and rescue operations continue

The fundraising comes as Nepal remains engaged in a large-scale search and rescue operation nearly two weeks after the Bhotekoshi flood.

The latest government situation update says 1,357 bodies have been recovered, while around 5,300 people remain missing. More than 13,500 people have been rescued, including over 300 foreign nationals.

Search teams continue to operate in flood-affected areas of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and other districts, including at several hydropower projects where workers are believed to have been trapped.

International rescue and forensic teams from countries including India, China, South Korea, Australia and Malaysia are also supporting Nepal's response.

Relief fund faces growing demand

The accumulated funds are expected to play an important role as the government moves beyond immediate rescue operations toward relief distribution, rehabilitation and reconstruction.

The disaster has damaged homes, roads, bridges, hydropower projects and other critical infrastructure. The government is also conducting detailed assessments to determine the full scale of the losses and reconstruction requirements.

With thousands of families still waiting for information about missing relatives, authorities face significant financial demands for emergency assistance as well as longer-term recovery.

The government has urged people and organisations contributing to the relief effort to use official channels and verify donation information to avoid fraudulent fundraising schemes.
