Nepal’s Home Minister Sudan Gurung has resigned from his position just weeks after taking office, creating fresh challenges for the newly formed government.
Gurung announced his resignation on Wednesday, saying he wanted to ensure a fair and transparent investigation into questions raised about his financial dealings.
The controversy surrounding him had been growing over the past few days, with allegations linked to his business connections and investment disclosures. Reports suggest that his ties to a businessman under investigation increased political pressure on him to step down.
Gurung had taken oath as Home Minister on March 27, 2026, but his tenure lasted less than a month.
His resignation makes him one of the shortest-serving Home Ministers in recent Nepali political history.
This is the second ministerial resignation in Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s newly formed government, raising concerns about stability and internal accountability.
Political analysts say the incident is a major test for the government, which came to power promising transparency and clean governance.
Prime Minister Shah is expected to temporarily take charge of the Home Ministry until a replacement is appointed.
The government has stated that investigations into the allegations will continue, emphasizing that public trust remains a top priority.
The resignation highlights the growing demand for accountability in Nepal’s politics. While the government has taken a strong stance on ethics, the coming days will be crucial in determining how it handles internal challenges and maintains public confidence.
