Nepal is on the verge of a major change in its diplomatic system, appointing ambassadors through an open competition for the first time in the country’s history.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials said the government is likely to soon issue vacancy notices so qualified candidates can apply for ambassadorial posts instead of relying on political appointments.
🏛️ Big Changes in Diplomatic Postings
Nepal traditionally has two major methods of appointing ambassadors:
• career diplomats of the Foreign Ministry
• Political appointees of ruling parties -
This system , however , has been criticized for a lack of transparency and for being subject to political influence .
The new plan is to make the selection process more transparent and merit-based so that qualified individuals outside of politics have a chance.
📢 Government’s Readiness
Officials say talks are already taking place within the ministry and work has been done to identify potential candidates.
It was confirmed at a recent senior-level meeting in the Foreign Ministry that some ambassador posts would be filled through open competition, although full details have yet to be made public.
⚖️ The Importance
This move is seen as a major reform because:
• It might reduce political interference
• Boost professionalism in diplomacy
• Enhance Nepal’s global image
• Make the selection fair and transparent
Experts say appointment of ambassadors on merit, not on political loyalty, could help improve Nepal’s foreign relations and policy consistency.
🔄 Previous Challenges
The appointment of ambassadors has often been a contentious issue in Nepal in the past. And even when criteria were introduced earlier, they were not always consistently adhered to by successive governments.
Nepal’s diplomatic system has grappled with stability issues, including frequent ambassadorial changes and politically driven decisions.
🌍 What's Next
If well implemented the open competition system could:
• Attract top qualified candidates .
• Raise accountability
• Reform Nepal’s Foreign Service
However, experts also warn that the success of this reform will depend on the transparency and fairness of the process.
📌 Abstract
Nepal’s move to fill the ambassadorial posts through open competition is a landmark move towards reforming its diplomatic system.
The policy promises transparency and merit-based selection, but how it is implemented will determine the actual impact. If done right, it could significantly strengthen Nepal’s global presence and credibility.
