Reading time: 3 min10 May Biratnagar The Morang district authorities have beefed up security at the Jogbani border point with India. Identity checks have been made compulsory and surveillance has been stepped up to prevent illegal infiltration and cross-border crime.
The District Security Committee has directed the security agencies to carry out strict checking of the people entering Nepal through the busy eastern border point.
Authorities say identity cards are now compulsory for travellers entering Nepal through Jogbani and more monitoring teams have been deployed in sensitive areas.
🚨 Intensified Monitoring in Border Regions
Security officials said special monitoring has been stepped up around train timings in nearby Indian border towns.
The authorities say the large groups coming into Nepal at the same time could be more of a security risk, especially given the regional situation at present.
For better inspections:
- More police units have been dispatched
Sniffer dogs are being used
- Random security checks have increased
- Passenger traffic is being closely monitored
Officials say the measures are part of Nepal’s internal security strategy to improve border management and prevent illegal activities.
⚠️ Fears of illegal infiltration
Authorities are especially concerned about the possibility of undocumented people trying to enter Nepal through open border routes, security sources say.
Recent political and humanitarian developments in India’s West Bengal have led Nepali security agencies to express concern over cross-border movement of Rohingya refugees and other undocumented groups, they say.
But officials said no confirmed cases of large-scale infiltration had been reported yet.
🕵️ Focused on Criminal Networks and Fugitives
Authorities are also working to prevent the movement of:
- Criminals wanted
Traffickers.
-Human trafficking rings
- Border routes fugitives
Historically, Nepal's eastern border has been sensitive due to the open-border system with India, whereby citizens of the two countries can move freely under long-standing bilateral arrangements.
Security agencies say criminal groups sometimes take advantage of these routes because of poor monitoring and heavy cross-border movement.
🇳🇵 Nepal Describes It as an Internal Security Decision
Officials said the latest security crackdown was Nepal’s own administrative decision and not due to any formal bilateral understanding with India.
The government says the measure aims to:
- Enhance national security
- Improve border management
- Increase monitoring capacity
- Stop illegal cross-border activity
Authorities said normal travel and trade operations between Nepal and India will continue.
🌍 Open borders face new pressure
Nepal and India share one of the most open international borders in the world, which is spread over 1,800 km.
When the boundary invites:
- Commerce
Positions
- Tourists
- Family and social links
Experts say there is greater instability in the region and cross-border crime is under pressure to increase border monitoring mechanisms.
📌 Summary
The tightening of security at Jogbani border reflects Nepal’s growing focus on internal security and border management amid increasing regional concerns.
The authorities are still involved in surveillance and identity checks and the situation will be closely watched over the coming weeks.
