Reading time: 3 min4 May Kathmandu The ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has been tough on party discipline, threatening to sack lawmakers who repeatedly defy party standards, which could lead to by-elections.
Party discipline is a top priority especially as RSP negotiates its early phase in government after a historic electoral victory,” party leaders said in a recent interview.
⚖️ Rigid Discipline Policy
RSP leaders said the party is committed to strict internal rules to ensure accountability among its Members of Parliament (MPs).
The leadership said:
MPs must adhere to high standards of discipline and ethics
- repeated violations will not be accepted
- In more serious cases, the party may seek by-elections to replace such lawmakers.
This is part of a wider pledge by the party for clean government and accountability.
🏛️ A Party on the Move
Despite a strong electoral mandate, RSP is still in a developing stage and challenges include:
- Providing a clear ideological direction
- Improving its organizational structure
- Governance experience in management leadership
The party has little experience of running a government, with only a handful of leaders having served as ministers before, reports say.
🔄 Keep in mind Accountability
The move to hold by-elections is in line with RSP’s earlier talk of a “right to recall” mechanism, to ensure that elected representatives are accountable to the party as well as the public.
Political observers say this approach is relatively new in Nepal’s political landscape and could set a precedent if done well.
🧠 Managing Change & Stability
While the move has been praised as an increase in accountability, some experts warn that:
- Political instability arising from frequent by-elections
- strict enforcement must be balanced with the democratic process
But many see it as a bold effort to break with a political culture where accountability has often been weak.
A New Political Culture?
RSP came to power in the wake of a wave of public demand for change, especially amongst younger voters looking for transparency and reform.
The party’s hard line on discipline reflects its effort to:
- Preserve public trust
- Deliver on anti-corruption pledges
- Set a new standard for governance
📌 Abstract
RSP’s message to its MPs is clear: discipline and accountability will be meted out with an iron hand.
If the party keeps its promise of holding by-elections for repeated violations, it could set a new standard for political responsibility in Nepal.
Whether or not it will succeed depends on how fairly and consistently those rules are applied in practice, however.
