Reading time: 3 min9 May Kathmandu Nepal-India diplomatic engagement under the newly formed government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah is once again in the news with the news of the scheduled visit of Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to Kathmandu being postponed.
Misri was expected to visit Nepal in the second week of May in India’s first major diplomatic outreach to the new government in Kathmandu, reports said. The visit, however, has been postponed for the time being.
🇳🇵 Significance Of The Visit
The visit was expected to:
- Build bilateral relations between Nepal and India
- Review of ongoing development and connectivity projects
- Create opportunities for high level visits in the future between the two countries
Indian officials reportedly were interested in taking the measure of the priorities of the new Shah government, especially with regard to:
- Cooperation in infrastructure
- Energy interconnection
- Diplomatic Action
- Regional strategic questions
⚠️ Reported Scheduling Uncertainty
Some reports indicate the delay was due to the inability to arrange a meeting with Prime Minister Balendra Shah. The Indian side was awaiting confirmation of a possible meeting schedule with the prime minister, those reports said.
Prime Minister Shah has become very cautious of late in his approach to diplomatic meetings and foreign visits. Earlier reports have also indicated that he has no plans for foreign trips for at least a year and will be focusing on issues of domestic governance and development.
But neither Kathmandu nor New Delhi have officially called the postponement a diplomatic spat.
🌏Nepal-India Relations Under Review
The development comes at a time when Nepal is seeing increased diplomatic engagement from multiple global powers, including:
- India
- CHINA.
- U.S.
Analysts say India is closely watching the political direction the new government in Kathmandu will take, and is looking to maintain strong engagement with Nepal amid changing regional dynamics.
📌 What’s next?
Officials of both countries are expected to continue to coordinate diplomatically to reschedule the visit in the coming weeks or months.
Observers say the delay is more likely to be due to timing and political scheduling rather than a major breakdown in relations between the two countries.
But the delay has attracted attention because it is among the first major high-level diplomatic engagements between India and Nepal under the Shah administration.---
