Reading time: 2 min4 May Kathmandu The Government of Nepal has reiterated its strong position on Lipulekh Pass stating that the disputed territory is an integral part of Nepal.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nepal has already raised its concerns with both India and China through diplomatic channels, particularly about activities such as the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage route passing through the area.
🇳🇵 Nepal’s position is clear
According to historical agreements, notably the 1816 Sugauli Treaty, Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani are integral parts of Nepal, the government said.
Nepal’s position, officials added, is:
- Clear and uniform
- On the basis of historical evidence and treaties
- Backed by official maps and documents
⚠️ Opposition to activities in the disputed area ⚠️
Nepal has specifically asked India to stop activities in the Lipulekh area, such as:
- Construction and expansion of roads
- Border trade activities
- Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, pilgrimage routes
It also reflects some degree of regional diplomatic coordination, as the Nepal government has also informed China about the country’s stance on the border issue.
🌎 Border Dispute Continues
For a long time, the Lipulekh Pass in the Himalayas near the tri-junction of Nepal, India and China, has been a disputed territory between Nepal and India.
Recent developments, including the reopening of the Kailash Mansarovar route through the area, have again brought the dispute into focus.
🤝 Call for a diplomatic resolution
Nepal has, however, reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue through diplomatic dialogue despite the tensions.
The Ministry said discussions must be guided by:
- Treaties and agreements through history
- Respect each other
- Bilateral relations are warm
Experts say ongoing dialogue is key to avoiding escalation and maintaining stability in the region.
