The Nepali Congress has invited leaders of major ruling and opposition parties to the opening ceremony of its 15th General Convention, scheduled to begin on October 2.

Nepali Congress Joint General Secretary Udaya Shumsher Rana said invitation letters were personally handed to three prominent political leaders on Friday.

Those invited are Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairman Rabi Lamichhane, CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Communist Party Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’.

Invitations extended ahead of convention

According to Rana, he met the three leaders individually and delivered letters inviting them to attend the opening ceremony of the party's convention.

The invitation comes as the Nepali Congress proceeds with preparations for its 15th General Convention, while internal disagreements over party organisation and participation have continued in recent months.

The convention process has included efforts to accommodate members associated with the party's previous central committee and address disputes over active membership.

Convention scheduled for October

The Nepali Congress has scheduled its central General Convention in Kathmandu from October 2 to 5, 2026.

The party's Central Election Committee revised the lower-level convention calendar earlier this month. Ward-level conventions were held on September 19 and 20, followed by municipal-level conventions on September 23 and Provincial Assembly and House of Representatives constituency-level conventions on September 26.

The central convention date, however, remained unchanged.

The party has also been dealing with a separate organisational dispute involving leaders who did not participate in the special general convention earlier this year. The Supreme Court has previously declined to halt the convention process, while related questions concerning the party's organisational legitimacy have remained under judicial consideration.

The invitations to leaders from other major political parties signal the Nepali Congress's intention to include representatives from across the political spectrum in the opening programme of its upcoming convention.

The party has not indicated through the invitation itself whether the three leaders will attend the ceremony.
