A disturbing trend is emerging globally – an escalation in the threat of political assassinations against leaders, officials and public figures. What was once seen as an anomaly in modern democratic systems, is now showing signs of a comeback, raising serious concerns about global stability and security.
Political analysts caution that this trend is not confined to any one country or region. Rather, it is indicative of a larger global trend of increasing use of violence as a means to affect political outcomes.
🌍 A Global Pattern Is Emerging
The recent episodes across the world have shown the power of political assassinations in affecting the countries.
Such events have often changed the course of political power, from Europe to the Americas. For example, both the 1986 assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme and the 2021 killing of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse resulted in political uncertainty and instability.
These cases demonstrate that even stable nations aren’t immune from such threats.
⚠️ Assassinations On The Rise Why
Experts say there are several reasons for the growing trend:
🔴 Political Polarisation
More divisions in societies create an atmosphere where extremist acts are more likely to take place.
🔴 Weak Institutions
Such attacks are more likely in countries with weak governance and weak security systems.
🔴 Impact of Organized Crime
In some places, criminal networks and political interests overlap, increasing the risk of targeted killings.
🔴 World Tensions
Foreign interventions and geopolitical rivalries may also bring destabilizing leadership.
Studies show that the number of assassination attempts has risen dramatically in recent years and they are not only against heads of state but also journalists, activists and local leaders.
🧠 Effects on Democracy and Stability
Political assassinations are not simply attacks on individuals. They have enormous national and global implications.
• They leave power vacuums
• More violence and civil unrest
• Undermine public trust in government
• “Disrupt the economic stability
Research has found that such acts typically lead to more instability and can undermine democratic systems over time.
🕰️ Is History Repeating?
There are numerous examples in history of assassinations influencing world events.
• World War I was sparked by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
• For example, Mahatma Gandhi and John F. Kennedy were assassinated in times of political tension.
• More recently, attacks on global figures have once again underscored the vulnerability of leadership
Political assassinations are making a comeback in the 21st century, experts say, due to rising extremism and weaker global institutions.
🔐 Growing Need for Security
Governments all over the world are having to rethink their security strategies.
The security of political leaders is not just about their personal safety, it is about the security of democratic systems and national stability.
Security experts stress:
• Strong intelligence regimes
• Sophisticated surveillance
• Better agency coordination
If these measures are not taken, the risk of attacks could continue to grow.
🌐 Implications for Countries like Nepal
Although such extreme cases have not occurred recently in Nepal, global patterns are a warning.
As political consciousness and activism increase, the importance of protecting leaders and maintaining stability is more vital than ever.
Experts say that countries like Nepal should:
• Strengthen internal security processes
• Advocate for openness in politics
• Decrease polarization
📌 Abstract
Beyond individual cases, the growing incidence of political assassination presents a serious challenge to the world. It is a symptom of deeper problems within societies, such as political polarization, weak governance and rising extremism.
Left unchecked, such a trend could endanger democratic systems and the stability of the world. Governments, institutions and citizens have a responsibility to ensure that leadership is safe – and that political change is achieved through dialogue, not violence.
