BYD’s Robot-Run Mega Factory Builds an EV in Under a Minute

17 May Kathmandu Chinese electric vehicle powerhouse BYD is rapidly changing the modern automotive manufacturing landscape with a super automated mega factory in China that can produce a new electric vehicle body in less than one minute.

The huge BYD plant in Zhengzhou, one of China’s fast-growing industrial hubs, operates at about 98 percent automation, relying heavily on robotics, artificial intelligence and smart manufacturing systems.

The factory is now one of the most visible symbols of China’s accelerating dominance of the global electric vehicle industry.

Inside the huge production complex, industrial robots carry out most major manufacturing tasks including:

- Soldering

- Stamping­

- Artworks

- Assembling vehicles

During a media visit last month, journalists apparently observed scant human workers on the production floor, with most operations handled by automated systems.

BYD claims that a new car body can now come off the production line in less than 60 seconds, one of the quickest EV production systems in the world.

The Zhengzhou plant, which covers an area of about 10.67 square kilometers, is a full EV manufacturing ecosystem.

Rather than relying heavily on outside suppliers, BYD produces many of its core components in-house including:

BYD has grown rapidly to become one of the world’s largest EV makers, competing more and more with global brands such as:

The company also is aggressively expanding into:

BYD has started setting up its European manufacturing facilities, including a large plant in Hungary that will go into mass production in 2026.
